Buchanan Foods, the Northern Ireland artisan producer of poultry, lamb and pork products, has launched a new peat smoked bacon.
The company, based near Upperlands, a rural community in county Derry, has developed an innovative dry cured bacon that’s cold smoked over traditional Irish peat, known in the region as turf, harvested from near the homeland in Bellaghy of Seamus Heaney, a world renowned poet and writer.
Buchanan Foods is a family owned and managed business which has won a series of UK Great Taste Awards for its free-range turkeys.
“The new turf smoked bacon is a development of our focus on creating deliciously different flavours for our meats,” says Jonathan Buchanan, who runs the artisan business with wife Lois. “The new bacon has a subtle smoked turf aroma when smoked and a deliciously different taste.
“The new bacon is the outcome of my work to create different products that will set us apart in the marketplace. The company already has a reputation for producing excellent turkey products which has included meat aged in our own small Himalayan salt chamber that we’ve constructed on our farm. Our aim is to be different, offering consumers unique flavours.
“We’ve test marketed the peat smoked bacon at farmers’ markets in Northern Ireland and received very positive feedback from shoppers. The bacon is smoked slowly for a short time over the embers of a turf fire for a distinctive flavour.
“It’s a process over which I have complete control and using bacon from a local supplier that’s fully traceable. We take great care in the whole process to ensure a superb product,” he adds.
Based on a small family farm in county Derry, Buchanan Foods has established its own farm shop and also supplies delis, farm shops and markets across Northern Ireland. The peat-smoked bacon retails at around £2.50 per pack of six slices.
Other products developed by the company include pork sausages such as pork and mango and honey and mustard. It recently launched its own version of vegetable roll, another traditional favourite made from minced beef, onions and leeks.
