Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Aldi outperform the market

Sainsbury’s has been named the  top player alongside Waitrose in the most recent data from Kantar Worldpanel.

In the three months leading up to 2 October, the supermarket increased its share of the market from 16.2% for the equivalent period last year to 16.5%.

It posted sales growth of 5.6%, ahead of the 4% growth seen across the market as a whole.

Waitrose also grew well ahead of the market, with sales up 9.3%, while Aldi continued its stellar run with growth of more than 25%. The discounter’s share currently stands at a record 2.9%.

Kantar’s Edward Garner said:

“Among the big four supermarkets, the standout performance is from Sainsbury’s,.

“Its sponsorship of the Paralympic games has clearly borne fruit, boosting its sales in this period.

“The retailer has also been bolstered by its Brand Match promotion and the ongoing relaunch of its own-label range – both of which are proving popular with consumers.

“It has also been a record-breaking period for Waitrose, posting its highest ever share of 4.7% and building on the strong performance we have seen over the past decade.”
