NEW KIDD’S ORANGE RED APPLE JOUCE FROM MAYNARD HOUSE
Maynard House Orchards is launching its home-grown heritage variety Kidd’s Orange Red to its on-trade customers.
Kidd’s Orange Red is set to join Maynard House Orchards’ Great Taste Gold award-winning range ahead of this year’s harvest.
It will be available on a limited basis in cases of 24 x 240ml bottles.
The Kidd’s Orange Red is a dessert apple, similar in size to a Cox but redder in colour and produces a sweeter juice with greater complexity and depth of flavour.
The variety was created in 1924, by Mr Kidd in New Zealand who crossed the Cox’s Orange Pippin with the Red Delicious.
The hybrid was discovered by Frederick E. Williamson, Clive Williamson, owner of Maynard House Orchards Apple Juices said:
“My grandfather brought Kidd’s Orange Red back to Britain in 1931 as he felt that the flavour of the fruit was exceptional.

“Once he returned to the UK he bought his first thirty acres of Orchard in Langham in Essex.
“This variety is very important to the Maynard House Orchards heritage.
“We will have capacity for around 4,000 bottles of Kidd’s Orange Red and we plan to plant more of our specially bred saplings in the coming years when the climate and soils are perfectly right for new growth.
“The planting of more Kidd’s Orange Red trees will not only continue an honoured family legacy but it also really does make a truly exceptional tasting apple juice variety.”
By the 1980s Williamson Fruit Farms Ltd stretched as far as Bury St Edmunds and was growing 2% of British apples, the Williamson’s ‘W’ logo became synonymous with care and quality.
The Suffolk-based farm still grows apples but has downsized in order to concentrate on assuring the quality and depth of flavours of the Maynard House Orchards Apple Juice.
Today it is still a Williamson family venture as Clive’s brother, Paul, farms the apple orchards whilst Clive concentrates on juice production, sales and marketing.
Until recently, the Maynard House Orchards Kidd’s Orange Red variety has been available only at The Fat Duck in Bray but is now being offered in 240ml bottles to luxury restaurants, hotels and bars across the UK.
The heritage juice joins the rest of the Maynard House Orchards range including the Apple & Raspberry, Apple & Elderflower and the celebrated Cox & Bramley varieties.
As with all Maynard House Orchards’ juices, the Kidd’s Orange Red variety is made from hand-picked apples; the apples are then pressed, gently pasteurised and bottled on-site to produce a cloudy juice.
The SALSA accredited Maynard House Orchard range has accumulated a collection of awards for the family mantelpiece from the National Fruit Show, including six first prizes in the last ten years, a Winner of the Quality Food Awards and the highly acclaimed Great Taste Gold two star award last year.
