DISCOVERY EXPANDS ITS OFFERING IN THE MEXICAN CATEGORY

February 21st, 2012

Discovery Foods is hoping to drive further growth within the Mexican category, currently worth £152m, by adding a new product to its expanding range of Mexican separates.

The launch of Discovery’s new Green Jalapeño Relish builds on the brand’s range of squeezy condiments, including Salsa (mild, medium and hot), Guacamole Style Topping and Soured Cream, further reinforcing the versatility of Mexican cuisine.

Designed to lend taste, ease and convenience to the increasingly popular Mexican eating occasion, the introduction of the new Green Jalapeño Relish hopes to further fuel the fajita DIY category, currently worth £55.6m.

The new squeezy condiment is being launched to help increase sales in-store and stimulate category growth by meeting current demand amongst shoppers for more adventurous tastes in a variety of formats.

The functional packaging for the new Green Jalapeño Relish is designed to maximise convenience and combat the misconception that all Mexican food is spicy with clear product messaging on its ‘medium’ heat rating captured on a 300g squeezy bottle.

Consumers can use the product as an accompanying dip or as a topping during the final stage of preparing the perfect fajita.

Craig Sammells, Marketing Manager, Discovery Foods, commented:

“More and more UK shoppers are buying into the Mexican category and our objective is to continue to grow this number by attracting new customers to the fixture through innovative NPD.

“With a range of great-tasting separates already on shelf, we are in the perfect position to introduce a Green Jalapeño Relish to the market and drive purchase in-store by delivering yet more choice in the Mexican aisle.”

The new Green Jalapeño Relish joins Discovery’s range of products, including cooking sauces, fajita kits, seasonings and tortillas (Plain Flour, Preservative Free, Chilli & Jalapeño, Garlic & Herb and Corn) – and is available in the Mexican section of the ethnic foods aisle at Sainsbury’s, priced at £2.09.
