Later this year the Swiss company Hermes Sweeteners, manufacturers of the sweetener brand Hermesetas, is to launch in the UK the first ever table top sweetener derived from a plant, according to their head office in Zurich, Switzerland.

The new sweetener, Hermesetas SteviaSweet, is made from an extract of the Stevia plant and was recently launched in Australia, France and Switzerland.

Now Hermes is pushing ahead with the product’s development in the expectation that full EU approval for Stevia for use as a food ingredient will be finalised before the end of 2011.

Hermes was the first international producer and marketer of table top sweeteners to introduce a complete range of Stevia based products and this understanding of consumers’ preferred choice will underpin their UK launch with a range consisting of tablet, granulated and sachet formats.

Expecting tough competition in the UK, Roland Rimann, CEO of Hermes is confident about the introduction of Hermesetas SteviaSweet, he said:

“With our in-depth & extensive knowledge of European markets and with appropriate and proven products, Hermes will have the best starting position in the UK.

Hermes Sweeteners was founded in 1904 and in 1932 registered the brand ‘Hermesetas’ as one of the first sweetener trademarks in the world. Today, Hermes is one of the largest manufacturers of table-top sweeteners in the world & Hermesetas is a popular sweetener brand sold in over 100 countries world-wide.

In many of these it holds a leading position especially in the UK, Scandinavia and southern Europe.
