TESCO OPENS FIRST DRIVE-THRU SERVICE
Tesco is due to open its first ever “drive-thru” service supermarket.
Customers to the supermarket will be able to place orders online and pick up their order in stores at an allotted time at a drive thu station.
The trial for the new service will launch at Tesco’s Baldock Extra store in Hertfordshire and if it proves to be a success Tesco plans to incorporate the scheme into its stores across the country.
For the duration of the trial customers shopping will be kept in a Tesco.com delivery van until customers collect it.
Tesco will be looking into how its stores could be adapted in the future to make drive-through shopping a more permanent, appealing service for customers.
Tesco customers are invited to order their shopping on Tesco.com website as normal, opting for the “Click and Collect” option instead of the delivery option at the checkout.
Customers are then asked to book a two-hour collection slot of their choice and they will be able to collect their purchases at anytime inside that two-hour window.
Laura Wade-Gery, chief executive of Tesco dotcom and Tesco Direct, said of the new scheme: ”This will be especially popular with busy mums who have the school run and children’s activities to manage.
It offers a solution to parents who want to avoid the challenge of shopping in a busy store with children in tow but can’t afford the time to stay in for the shop to arrive to their door.
We also expect it to help young professionals who want the convenience of a pre-picked and packed shop but who cannot commit to waiting at home for delivery.
Customers drive up to a reserved area in the car park, which will be signposted, and pull into a covered space to show a member of staff their shopping reference details.
Staff come to the customer’s car window so there is no need to get out, and the shopping is then packed into the boot.”
The scheme could reduce que sizes as well as preventing customers who favour shopping online from having to pay the extra for delivery charges.
