STEWED! ANNOUNCES NEW ADDITION TO ITS WINTER RANGE

August 18th, 2010

Robert Smith, a self-confessed ‘non-cook’ from Kent, has won the nationwide stewed! / NatMags competition with ‘Bob’s Beery Stew.’

The recipe is a twist on a Beef and Ale stew, which will join the stewed! range this coming winter.

Bob is particularly thrilled that his recipe will use gluten-free beer – in keeping with the stewed! range – as the 10 year old son for whom he created the stew is autistic, and has consequently been advised to follow a gluten-free diet.

Back in May, stewed! ran a competition through NatMags’ Thirty Days of Food and Drink celebrations, scouring the country for the ultimate British stew recipe to add to their range for Winter 2010 / 11.

The response was phenomenal, with inspired recipes pouring in from every corner of the British Isles, ranging – as an encouraging reflection on the cosmopolitan influences that now constitute British cuisine – from curries to traditional Irish stews to combinations like chocolate and beef or lamb with cranberry dumplings.

Bob’s Beery Stew was chosen as the winner  and judges commented:

“We loved the homely depth of flavour added by the beer and the masses of hearty, wintery root veggies: carrots, swede and parsnips. A winter warmer of the finest tradition.”

A self-confessed infrequent cook, Bob created the stew as a wholesome meal for his young son, when he comes to stay with him; and was overwhelmed by his win and the prospect of seeing his name on the side of a stewed! pot. Bob commented:

” I am really pleased to have won and hope everyone who tries Bob’s Beery Stew likes it. It’s a first for me, so enjoy the stew … but don’t get stewed.”

As a gluten-free range, Bob was pleased to hear that his stew will be made with gluten-free beer: his 10 year old son is autistic and evidence suggest that a gluten-free diet can lessen autistic symptoms, such as impulsive behaviour, lack of focus and even speech problems.

Bob will join stewed! chef-founder Alan Rosenthal in the kitchen for a day in September to work on developing his recipe for manufacture and for the prospect of the national distribution of Bob’s Beery Stew in January 2011.

Stewed! has also increased its lists of stockists with Nisa Today stores now stocking the range and an increased up to eighty Budgens outlets following the example of selected Waitrose and Sainsbury’s stores, of John Lewis foodhall, ocado.com and various independents, including Sourced Market in St Pancras Station.
