PEPERAMI LAUNCHES INTO THE PIZZA MARKET

August 11th, 2010

The UK’s one hundred percent pork salami, Peperami, is set to take on the chilled pizza category for the first time with the launch of new Peperami Pizzas.

The seven-inch pizzas, which will be available from mid-September, come in Original, Spicy and BBQ variants and are targeting the snack market.

The launch hopes to benefit from £4m of marketing spend invested in the Peperami brand this year.

Each pizza comes with new technology to give a crispy base when cooked in a microwave as well as being able to be cooked in conventional ovens.

Julie McCleave, commercial manager for licensing at Unilever, said:

“Peperami is associated with meaty madness and Peperami pizza brings fun and interest to the pizza category.

Customers can expect the same high quality ingredients as with the salami snack and the pizza includes a high tech microwavable disc to ensure a delicious, crispy base prepared in three minutes.”

The Peperami Pizza is being produced and sold under license by Bakkavor.

Graham Blades, commercial manager at Bakkavor, said:

“Feedback from our consumer research was really positive with ninety percent of respondents loving the idea of Peperami Pizza and eighty percent stating an intention to purchase.

We are confident that large retailers and smaller convenience stores will benefit from this exciting innovation which marries Britain’s love of Peperami with its passion for Pizza.”

Peperami Pizza is a chilled product and will be available in two case sizes; eight for large retailers and cases of four for smaller, convenience stores.

Both cases double up as retailer ready packaging and the recommended retail price for Peperami Pizza is £1.99.
