NATIONAL CUPCAKE WEEK ANNOUNCES RECIPE WINNER

August 23rd, 2010

British Baker announces restaurant chef David Bennett from Leeds the winner of 2010 National Cupcake Week contest.

David overcame stiff competition from over sixty professional bakers in the National Cupcake-off to take the title in the run up to National Cupcake Week.

The Cupcake Week takes place next month on 13-19th September 2010.

The special week was launched by trade magazine British Baker to celebrate and promote the creativity and innovation of a popular classic of the British baked goods industry.

David, who owns the Sunshine Bakery in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, was voted Cupcake Champion of Britain for his Banana and Mango Cupcake recipe.

Celebrity judge, the patissier Eric Lanlard, described the cupcake as “a breath of fresh air”, as it stood out among other entries.

David’s cupcake is a sponge made of toasted ground almonds, banana puree, mango puree and muscovado sugar, with a  topping of mascarpone, caramelised banana puree, muscovado sugar and rum.

David, who used to work in Michelin star restaurants, five of them under Marco Pierre White, said:

“My inspiration for this cupcake is sunny days. We stand out because we only use natural ingredients and make everything from scratch using French gastronomic recipes.”

The finals of the competition were hosted by the eco-boutique Hotel Rafayel, located near Chelsea Wharf in London, which houses a cupcakery, MyChelle’s, in its foyer.

The Cupcake-off was filmed by the Food Network for broadcast on Sky Channel 262.

In addition to the overall champion, the expert judges chose six winners, with a different cupcake baker selected to mark each day of National Cupcake Week.

They include three cupcake bakeries all from Dorset. They are:

Ernest Hemmingway Cupcake

Monday: Chocolate Ginger Cupcake (vegan) – Lisa Harris, The Cupcake Theatre, Bournemouth
Tuesday: Tropical Explosion – Natalie Penzer & Rachel Brown, Cupcake Garden, Beaminster
Wednesday: Ernest Hemmingway – Vicky Parker, Sweet Tooth Cupcakery, Manchester
Thursday: Cosmopolitan – Stephanie Sippitt, The Butterfly Bakery, Poole
Friday: Sweet & Wicked Mojito – Susan Angoy, Sweet & Wicked, London
Saturday (champion): Banana & Mango – David Bennett, Sunshine Bakery, Leeds
Sunday: Sticky Toffee – Katie Rawcliffe, The Little House of Cupcakes, Thornton

British Baker deputy editor Andrew Williams said:

“David’s entry was creative and balanced, without the overwhelming sweetness of many American-inspired cupcakes.

It works well as a dessert and takes cupcake-making techniques to a new level.”
