MARMITE COSTS MORE THAN A GALLON OF PETROL
The cost of the popular yeast based spread Marmite has risen by twenty five per cent in five years and as a result is now more expensive to purchase than rump steak or a gallon of petrol.
According to a report by The Mail on Sunday Marmite’s price tag makes it more pricy than steak or a gallon of petrol in most parts of Britain.
The standard five hundred gram pot of marmite, currently costs consumers £5.03 at Sainsbury and £5.38 at Waitrose.
Reports show that in the last year sales of Marmite rose by two per cent with up to sixty million jars being produced for sale annually.
Unilever would not discuss reasons behind the price increase.
The Editor of the food magazine The Grocer,Adam Leyland, commented:
“Compared with bread, which has gone up by around forty per cent in price over the past five years, this is a relatively modest rise.
But Marmite does not appear to contain any ingredients that have been subject to sharp price hikes. This could be a case of Unilever trying to increase its profit margins.”
Britain is responsible for consuming over half of the world’s yeast extract, according to research by Unilever, but whether this consumption will continue with such high price rises is yet to be seen.
First introduced into the market back in 1902, marmite has proved increasingly popular with some consumers, basing its most recent advertising campaigns around a ‘love it or hate it’ theme.
Marmite has branched out from the condiment market since it launched releasing Marmite flavored cereal bars, ricecakes, breadsticks and cheddar bites.
