SURF SEEDS IS A HEALTHY SNACK OPTION SET TO SWEEP EUROPE

July 6th, 2010

Surf Seeds is a new and healthy snack food of natural sunflower seeds that are proving popular across Europe.

The Seed mixes contain sunflower seeds, some with a natural chocolate coat, pumpkin seeds, and blueberries.

Surf Seeds is a brand new Irish healthy snack food product based in Drunshambo Co. Leitrim and Dun Laoighaire Co Dublin.

Tim Rooney developed the product and came up with the idea of using sunflower and other seed varieties as a healthy snack food after developing a range of seeded breads for a supermarket chain.

Surf Seeds received a gold medal at the Great Taste Awards and successfully pitched to Dragons Den receiving one hundred thousand euros for a twenty per cent stake in their company, valuing the company at five hundred thousand euros.

Surf Seeds comes in three varieties:

Original – A mix of sunflower seeds and Belgian chocolate coated sunflower seeds
Pumpkin – A mix of pumpkin seed, sunflower seed, and chocolate covered sunflower seeds
Blueberry – A mix of wild organic dried Canadian blueberries.

Each variety comes in packaging that is resealable and refillable. The packaging was designed by Tim and mimics the shape of a surf board and sun flower seed. The design itself is being short listed for design awards throughout Europe.

The product is one of the first major commitments to make snack food healthy, cool and fun, therefore Surf Seeds will be the first healthy food to compete with all types of snack food purchases.

The Sunflower seeds in the product are full of healthy fats and also contain high levels of fibre, proteins, minerals and phytochemicals such as:

  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin B1
  • Vitamin B5
  • Manganese
  • Magnesium
  • Copper
  • Selenium
  • Phosphorous
  • Folate
  • Tryptophan

In addition to this long list of vitamins, Surf Seeds is low in sugar, low in salt and contain no cholesterol.

The high levels of vitamin E found in sunflower seeds have been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and their antioxidants can help control free radicals that are linked to cancer.

The tryptophan can help to process serotonin, which is one the chemicals that keeps humans feeling happy and relaxed.

Rather than the highs and lows of high sugar and saturated fat snacks, sunflower seeds help maintain consistent energy levels due to their supply of proteins and carbohydrates.

Recent research suggests that sunflower seeds could aid the process of quitting smoking. The act of breaking down the constituents of sunflower seeds mimics some of the effects of nicotine, therefore inducing some of the satisfaction found in the act of smoking.

Each product contains seventy five grams of mix and come in cases of twelve, although they can be purchased individually.

the product RRP’s at £14.88 for a case of twelve and £1.69-£1.79 for individual packs.
