CAMEL’S MILK LOOKS SET TO SELL IN BRITAIN

July 27th, 2010

Consumers could soon be able to purchase camel’s milk from their supermarket shelves as a Middle East firm attempts to get permission to sell the product in Britain.

Due to its low fat content and high levels of Vitamin C the milk looks set to appeal to the more health conscious consumer as it is also more digestible than regular cow’s milk.

Reports say that the milk tastes more salty than regular milk and as well as the added health benefits, the milk hopes to appeal to lactose-intolerant shoppers.

Indian research into the milk’s properties showed that it contains high levels of insulin and has helped sufferers of Type 2 diabetes as it helps to reduce their dependency on insulin injections.

However, these reports are being approached with caution by specialists who ask Diabetics to continue using insulin even if they consumer the camel milk.

A Diabetes UK spokesman said:

“Even if the insulin in the milk did work, it would have to be taken in very specific quantities at certain times of the day otherwise people with diabetes would be at greater risk of low and high blood glucose levels.”

There are two Middle Eastern camel farms who have been given the provisional ‘yes’ by The European Commission to export their milk into Britain and reports say that one firm is waiting for checks by ED health inspectors to be completed.

Camels only produce up to thirteen pints of milk a day which, compared to the fifty pints that cows can produce, explains why there are few camel’s milk companies operating around the globe.

The camel’s milk companies that look set to conquer Britain have been in talks with health food stores about the prospect of stocking the milk, including famous London based Harrods.
