BRITISH SAUSAGE WEEK CELEBRATES ITS 13TH ANNIVERSARY
British Sausage Week celebrates its 13th anniversary in November 2010.
One of the most popular events on the food calendar, British Sausage Week is embraced by chefs, retailers and consumers alike and this year looks to be no different, with a high profile programme of activity planned to run from 1 to 7 November 2010.
In 2009, the week set sausage sales alight in pubs, restaurants and on the high street and also generated seventeen million pounds worth of media coverage.
The campaign reached an audience of four hundred and fifty million; which is potentially every UK citizen seeing or hearing about British Sausage Week seven times.
That is a tall order to beat, but a packed programme hopes to ensure that this year is the best ever at promoting quality sausages, such as those that are sourced from an assured supply chain including the Red Tractor scheme from Assured Food Standards.
Many foodservice establishments and independent retailers recognise the business potential from the week as Ruth Conner, marketing manager of a north eastern-based supplier to both the retail and foodservice trade, is one of the Week’s biggest supporters. She said:
“We always get a great response to British Sausage Week; from our staff, customers and the local media.
It’s a great platform to come up with new and exciting sausage specialities, to shout about how good our sausages are and itis a fantastic opportunity to get some positive PR of the business.

Last year we held a competition for a local catering college, while all of our retail outlets ran promotions and offers, and took part in the BPEX competitions with great success.”
BPEX is a division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board and it also represents pig levy payers in England and works to improve the competitiveness and efficiency of the English pig industry.
The Red Tractor logo indicates the quality and country of origin of pork, ham and sausages, that it is assured and fully traceable back to the farm, and is independently inspected at every stage of production
Leeds pub manager Terry Grayson said:
“We are proud to be a ‘speciality house’ with a dedicated menu for the Great British Classic, sausages! Our sausage menu is quite extensive and holds 10 different varieties.
So when it comes to British Sausage Week we are quite literally prepared for the occasion. We advertise our involvement on our chalk boards and during the week and hold sausage themed quizzes and run special meal offers.”
Point of sale material for retailers and foodservice outlets, along with recipe ideas will be made available in the run-up to the Week, while a nationwide competition judged by one of the strictest judges in the land, will be announced later in the year.
