THE CO-OPERATIVE GOOD WITH FOOD ROADSHOW SHOWCASES LOCAL SCOTTISH PRODUCE AT EDINBURGH’S ROYAL HIGHLAND SHOW

June 24th, 2010

The Co-operative Group’s Managing Director of Farms, Christine Tacon, and Head of Food Product, Policy and Technology, Kate Jones will be joined by Richard Lochhead MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment.

It will take place today (June 24) at 3.30 pm at The Co-operative’s Good with Food stand at The Royal Highlands Show.

The Co-operative Food is the UK’s fifth largest food retailer after its recent purchase of Somerfield.

With a store in every postal area in the UK bar one, The Co-operative Food prides itself on being a community retailer.

The roadshow helps to bring The Co-operative’s “Good with Food” ethos alive and there will be opportunities for visitors to test regional samples of Co-operative food and drink at the Royal Highland Show throughout the day.

Locally grown food and drink will also be on the menu as Scottish celebrity chef Jaqueline O’ Donell will cook up a taste of the Highlands in The Co-operative Kitchen.

Jaqueline co-owns two restaurants called The Sisters in Glasgow and is preparing a warm Italian beef salad using Aberdeen Angus beef with new potatoes from The Co-operative’s own farm in Carnoustie in Scotland.

This is her first appearance as chef for The Co-operative Good with Food stand. She will complete her cooking demonstration at the stand at 3.30 pm.

This will be followed by a raspberry crush syllabub using The Co-operative’s Truly Irresistible sparkling raspberry crush drink made with Scottish raspberries from Abroath in Angus and Fairtrade dark chocolate.

Visitors to The Co-operative Food’s stand can also learn more about the journey food and drink makes from farm to fork.

The Co-operative is Britain’s largest farmer and a new farming area at the stand has facts and activities focused around eggs, cheese-making, fruit and vegetables and The Co-operative Food’s higher-welfare Elmwood Chicken.

Interactive exhibits such as Plan Bee explain how to help save British honeybees from extinction and children can hop on a “smoothie” bike to pedal their way to one of their five-a-day by whipping up a healthy drink made from Scottish fruits.

The Co-operative is committed to sourcing as much food as it can from British suppliers, whilst its Grown by Us range, which is sold in Co-operative food stores, includes products grown on its farms, or made using produce grown by the business.
