SHEFFIELD FOOD FESTIVAL 1ST – 6TH JUNE

May 28th, 2010

Sheffield’s first ever Food Festival will be held this year, to celebrate the city’s vibrant food culture, inform people about how buying local can reduce their carbon footprint and give people exciting and healthy cooking ideas to try out at home.

The home of Henderson’s Relish, ‘Our Cow Molly’ ice cream and the Michelin starred Milestone restaurant will play host to an exciting array of events taking place between 1-6 June 2010 in the communities and countryside throughout Sheffield, as well as in the striking and beautiful city centre. Events include a ‘Picnic at Peace’ in the famous Sheffield Peach Gardens, ‘Food for Thought’ activities for children and a local wine festival.

Lee Adams, Deputy Chief Executive at Sheffield City Council, said: “What makes the Sheffield Food Festival truly unique in the UK are the links to tackling the issues of food sustainability and childhood obesity. We recognise that good food in our city is important to the health of residents, building a sense of community, and our overall prosperity. The Sheffield Food Festival will be addressing these important issues, as well as being about fun, enjoyment and celebrating great and delicious local food.”

Edge Street Events has been contracted by Sheffield City Council to organise the Festival. They have organised similar and hugely successful events in Manchester and Southport.

Phil Jones at Edge Street Events, said: “We are thrilled to be organising the Sheffield Food Festival. Sheffield is in a unique position in the country to offer a truly diverse food experience. Geographically, the city is positioned between the meat and livestock farming of the Pennines and the agriculture of Lincolnshire. The range of locally sourced produce available in Sheffield is exceptional.”

The Sheffield Food Festival will also act as a consultation for the Sheffield Food Plan, an innovative approach being taking by the city to tackling the significant food related challenges it faces. The Sheffield Food Plan is funded by Sheffield’s city-wide, £10million obesity prevention programme, which includes membership from NHS Sheffield, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Sheffield’s voluntary community.
