Paul was ahead of his time when in 1982 he insisted on creating great tasting recipes with no “help” from preservatives, artificial colours or additives. Today, Newman’s Own dressings and marinades are still made using only the best, all-natural ingredients.

From the start, Paul decided that any profit from Newman’s Own should go to worthy causes. To date, Paul Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation have given more than $295m to thousands of charities around the world, including many in the UK. And all profits from the Newman’s Own range will continue to be given to charity, making sure Newman’s Own Dressings and Marinades are, and always will be, generously delicious!

The Paul Newman story:

Paul Newman was always astonished at the success of Newman’s Own and referred to it as the “joke that got out of control”. Despite this humorous approach, he was deadly serious about both building Newman’s Own as a business and providing top quality, all-natural products long before the “no artificial nasties” lobby was fashionable.

The Hollywood star had always been something of a salad dressing connoisseur and when eating out would ask the chef to bring him the ingredients needed to make his own at the table. His first commercial batch of salad dressing was made in an old bathtub way back in 1982, stirred by something suspiciously resembling a canoe paddle, and bottled in old wine bottles.
Paul and his friend A.E. Hotchner, later his business partner, had been bottling home-made dressing as Christmas gifts for family and friends and found themselves with half a bathtub left over! Newman’s Own has since grown into a thriving global business with best-selling products, including his marinades, enjoyed around the world.

As Paul himself once admitted when asked how he accounted for its massive success: “Pure luck? Transcendental meditation? Machiavellian manipulation? Aerodynamics? High colonics? We haven’t the slightest idea!”

From the beginning, Paul Newman intended all profits should go to worthy causes first as “an interesting experiment” and later “because these dollars really mean something to a lot of charities”. To date, Newman’s Own Foundation has donated more than $295 million to thousands of charities worldwide, including many in the UK, and is a powerful and lasting expression of Paul Newman’s generosity.

The much-loved actor, who died at the end of 2008, willingly used his celebrity status to promote his hugely successful quality food products.

Newman’s Own will miss Paul’s tongue-in-cheek humour and his leadership, but will honour his vision. All profits from the Newman’s Own range of salad dressings and marinades will continue to be given to charity through the Newman’s Own Foundation. Paul has gone, but his legacy lives on.
