HONEYTOP BAKERY EXPANDS
Honeytop, Europe’s most technologically advanced bakery, has announced the completion of a major expansion project. The company has created a number of new jobs, doubled its capacity and significantly enhanced its production facilities.
Despite the economic downturn, the Dunstable-based company – which makes authentic flatbreads, tortillas, naans and crumpets – has created 140 new jobs and acquired an additional 130,000 sq. ft of production space on the Woodside Industrial Estate – a 100 acre site regarded as one of the most significant unbroken industrial land holdings along the M1 corridor.
Honeytop’s expansion is the result of strengthened relationships with new and existing customers following a move into the production of morning goods including crumpets and pancakes. The development forms part of an ambitious growth plan to increase the company’s global production capacity and brings the total workforce to 400 employees.
As part of the 18-month development programme, Honeytop’s unique team of in-house engineers have built several bespoke hot-plate lines for the baking of batter-based products. Taking the underlying principles of existing production methods and combining them with state-of-the-art technology such as high-speed robotics, Honeytop has breathed new life into processes that have largely remained unchanged for the best part of half a century. The result is an extremely efficient production facility producing consistently high-quality goods offering customers lower production costs and speed to market.
David Laurence, joint managing director of Honeytop, said that the expansion was a major step forward for the family-owned business and that all areas of the business from product development to finance had been strengthened.
He said: “The expansion has seen the business develop in new and exciting ways, with a more complete range of products and many talented people joining the team. We are extremely happy with how things are progressing – our products and people make us very proud.”
He added: “Up until the end of 2008 we occupied 70,000 sq. ft across two sites. Now we have 200,000 sq. ft of space but we are always on the look out for when new sites become available as we plan our further expansion and continuous growth.”
