CRANTOCK LAUNCHES “UN-CORNISH” PASTY

May 27th, 2010

A Cornish bakery has broken with tradition to produce what they claim is the finest “un-Cornish” pasty.

Crantock Bakery, renowned for producing bake-off pasties hand-crimped in the traditional Cornish style, has launched a new style of pasty in response to customer demand.

The Crantock Armadillo, like all pasties created by Crantock Bakery, is deep-filled with fresh ingredients encased in shortcrust pastry.

However, instead of being crimped along the side, as is traditional with Cornish pasties, it is top-crimped, resembling the armour-like shell of an armadillo.

National sales manager Leigh Loomes said:

“We know the armadillo style isn’t Cornish and we’d never pass it off as such. However, we have been asked by our customers to produce an armadillo-style pasty, and as the top Cornish pasty producer we wanted to help.

“And as it is easier to crimp a pasty along the top rather than the side the Crantock Armadillo offers unbelievable bake-off value without compromising on great ingredients or great taste. I believe we have created the finest un-Cornish pasty.”

Available in two versions, The Crantock Armadillo is filled with either the traditional Cornish filling of steak, potatoes, onion and swede, or with vegetarian cheese and onion.

Crantock Bakery is highly regarded in the bake off industry and their pasties, sausage rolls and hand-raised pies are sold in multiples, specialist pasty chains and bakeries all over the country.

Founded in 1981, Crantock Bakery are used to extending their baking skills beyond traditional Cornish products and were the first bakery to create a pasty aimed purely at the Halal market.

Crantock Bakery is an award-winning manufacturer of Cornish pasties and bake-off products. Founded in 1981, the company employs over 150 people at their purpose-built bakery near Newquay in Cornwall. Following a multi-million programme of investment the 27,000 sq ft premises last year produced over 19 million pasties – all hand-crimped in the traditional Cornish way.

The continually-expanding product range includes sausage rolls, hand-raised pies, scones and thirty different pasties.
