BRITISH SANDWICH WEEK 9TH – 15TH MAY
The results of a British Cheese Board survey show that people in Britain are playing it safe when it comes to their cheese sandwiches, with 28% of people across the country choosing Mature Cheddar and pickle as their favourite filling, followed closely by Vintage Cheddar and onion (19%). To liven up the country’s lunchboxes, the British Cheese Board is challenging Brits to try a different cheese this British Sandwich Week (9-15 May).
Fewer people were tempted by some of the more unusual British cheeses on offer – Brie, Mozzarella and Halloumi made in Britain were, collectively, favourites for only 12% of the country’s cheese lovers.
The British Cheese Board survey also showed that your age, sex and local loyalties might also determine your sandwich of choice:
- Bristolians stayed true to their local cheddar cheese heritage, with 38% voting Mature Cheddar and pickle as the number one choice at lunchtime, making them Britain’s biggest cheese and pickle fans
- Women are most adventurous when it comes to the cheeses they put in their lunchboxes. While most men surveyed plumped for Cheddar based sandwiches (cheese and pickle, and cheese and onion), women were more open to the variety of British cheeses available, and were three times more likely than men to choose Halloumi and roasted vegetables as their favourite sandwich
- Older people are less keen on modern cheese trends: less than 4% of over 55s counted Mozzarella, basil and tomato as their favourite sandwich, compared to more than 12% of 16-24 year olds
Nigel White, British Cheese Board secretary said:
“Our survey results show the huge appetite for cheddar in this country, which is fantastic, but it also suggests that people might not be daring to try something different. There are hundreds of different cheeses made in this country, from traditional varieties like Stilton or Lancashire, to British Brie and Mozzarella. Our challenge to the nation is this: try a different cheese in your sandwich, and let us know what you think!”
There are over 700 different named cheeses produced in Britain, and a variety of different textures and styles. You can find out more about the different categories of cheese available on the British Cheese Board website at: http://www.britishcheese.com/cheese
For people who just can’t give up cheddar, a number of British Cheese Board members have a web app to create the formula for your perfect sandwich, experimenting with 13 different cheddars. Once you’ve created your ideal sandwich, you can send it on and recommend it to your friends: http://www.cheddarometer.com/
