WHOOPIE PIES COULD BE THE NEXT THING
We are told the latest cake craze to hit the UK is whoopie pies. A cross between a cookie and a cake sandwich, a whoopie pie is two rounds of cake, filled with whipped cream or butter-cream, finished with icing and sprinkles.
The reported legend has it that the story began in the 1920s, when Amish farmers’ wives started making them as lunchtime treats for their husbands, who ploughed the fields in Pennyslvania. When the farmers got a cake they shouted “Whoopie!”
The ingredient makers say with the Macphie range of ingredients, it’s easy to tap into this exciting new idea. The Mississippi Muffin/Cake range offers convenience and quality in a choice of plain, chocolate and toffee flavours.
Macphie is offering free, novelty point-of-sale material to help retailers take advantage of the whoopie pie craze and promote them in-store. They can easily be attached to windows, counters, display cabinets or doors.
Macphie marketing manager, Jania Boyd, said: “Whoopie pies are the hottest trend for 2010! They’re an irresistible, fun treat appealing to the child in everyone.
I take great pleasure in seeing people’s faces light up when they see them. This is just what bakers and caterers have been crying out for, a new opportunity to grow their profits. Whatever your skill level, the Macphie range of cake mixes, cream alternatives and icings make light work of producing whoopie pies.”
