WHERE DID BURGER SAUCE APPEAR FROM?

March 17th, 2010

BurgerSuddently Burger Sauce is the condiment of choice in hamburger outlets.  Where did it come from?  It has the taste of mayonnaise, and dill pickle, and tomato sauce all rolled into one.

We are told that Hammonds (Owned by McCormick’s Foodservice Division) has had a part to play in this.  Well they’ve been supplying it, but actually consumers have developed a taste for it.  Is there some sensory explanation?  Good burgers are naturally “Umami” because they are grilled … and the surface of the meat has an intsensified flavour called “Maillard” after the “Roasting Reaction”, could it be this sauce is the pefect counterpart?

Accounting for almost 40% of the total sales of Hammonds’ 1 litre range, Burger Sauce is highly regarded by the independent catering sector as a must-have item.

One operator tells how,

“If I were to stop putting it in his burgers, my customers would notice.”

Such is the interest in this celebrated sauce, it even has its own Facebook Group and there are numerous online forums that debate the mystery surrounding the actual recipe of Burger Sauce. But everyone seems to agree, a burger just isn’t complete without a splash of Hammonds!

Since Hammonds Sauce 1837 it has been the brand of choice for many fast food outlets and pubs.

The he he full range includes Tomato Ketchup, Brown Sauce, BBQ Sauce, NEW Hot Chilli Sauce, Sweet Chilli Sauce, Mayonnaise, Garlic Mayonnaise, American Mustard and Salad Cream. But the star of the show has to be Burger Sauce.
