REGIONAL FOOD GROUP PROMOTES RESTAURANT HYGIENE

March 1st, 2010

The Regional Food Group for Yorkshire and Humber (RFG) has been working with its members to improve their ‘Scores on the Doors’ rating.

Scores on the Doors is a scheme devised by the Food Standards Agency, to promote food safety, give consumers information to help them choose food outlets with the highest standards, and help businesses to improve hygiene standards.

Over 90 Local authorities (11 in Yorkshire and Humber) have already opted into the scheme and are responsible for inspecting and grading any business which deals with food, including producers, distributors, hotels, butchers, newsagents, restaurants and supermarkets. The rating from zero to five is accessible to everyone on the Scores on the Doors website.

RFG Key Account Manager Kevin Vaughan says: “Consumers want to know that their food is produced under the highest food safety and hygiene standards, and with this standardised measure, they can. Over 20,000 businesses in Yorkshire and Humber have already been rated with the help of RFG, including hospitality providers, including delis, farmshops and retailers.

“Helping to improve a company’s food safety systems and prepare for inspection can take anything from one day to several months, and RFG can help with every aspect of the assessment.”

Acclaimed Yorkshire Indian restaurant chain Akbar’s worked with Kevin at RFG to achieve its 5* rating, the highest hygiene award possible, for its Middlesborough and Bradford premises. The company is continuing to work with RFG to repeat its success with its eight other branches.

Kevin continues: “We have been working with Akbar’s over recent months to design a quality management system to roll out across all of its restaurants. It is commendable that the company is so committed to pursuing excellent ratings on every aspect of food safety and hygiene. We hope other food-related companies come forward to work with us.”
