HIGHER WELFARE ELMWOOD TURKEY ALL YEAR ROUND AT CO-OP

March 17th, 2010

The Co-operative is rolling out its higher-welfare Elmwood standard to all its fresh plain own-brand turkey products, as part of its ongoing commitment to animal welfare.

All own-brand fresh and frozen whole turkeys and turkey crowns were converted to Elmwood for Easter 2009. From 30 March 2010, all Co-operative fresh plain turkey products – including fillets, steaks, mince and pieces – will also become Elmwood standard.

The Co-operative has selected a small group of family-run British farms to embrace its own higher-welfare and quality standards.

The farmers chosen are some of the best in the poultry business, to ensure that our Elmwood standards are adhered to at every level. By nurturing the turkeys for longer in a more enriched, sunlit environment with more room to move about and perch, Elmwood turkey is perfectly tender, moist and flavoursome.

All Co-operative fresh whole chickens were converted to the higher-welfare Elmwood standard or above in October 2007, and the initiative was rolled out to include all own-brand fresh plain chicken fillets and pieces in 2008. In 2009, all Co-operative barbecue chicken products – fresh and frozen – were made using Elmwood chicken, as well as all own-brand ready-to-eat plain roast chicken products. Flavoured ready-to-eat chicken will become Elmwood in May this year.

The move to extend the Elmwood standard is in line with The Co-operative’s ground-breaking Food Ethical Policy, which was launched in February 2008, based on the responses of more than 100,000 customer-members across the UK. Animal welfare emerged as one of the main areas that members wished to see prioritised by the business.

The Co-operative Group stands apart from other major retailers in the UK as a business which is owned, not by a small group of shareholders, but by more than five million consumers. With core interests in food, financial services, travel, pharmacy and funerals, it has an annual turnover of more than £14 billion, employs 123,000 staff and operates over 5,000 retail trading outlets handling more than 20 million weekly transactions.

Following the acquisition of the Somerfield supermarket chain in March 2009, The Co-operative Food is the fifth largest food retailer. The Co-operative Financial Services is one of the largest and most diversified financial mutual businesses operating The Co-operative Bank, The Co-operative Insurance and Britannia.
The Co-operative is the UK’s number one provider of funeral services, the third largest retail pharmacy chain, and a leading travel retailer, supplying the travel needs of more than three million people annually.

Among its other businesses are The Co-operative Motor Group, The Co-operative Electrical Shop and The Co-operative Legal Services.
