FREEFROM AWARDS – AN INVALUABLE MARKETING TOOL
“Winning the 2009 FreeFrom Food Awards was fantastic for my business. All those sceptical buyers who had needed convincing that my products were worth considering – as a result of my win they all contacted me! My business continues to benefit a year later.” Trisha Kelly of the Healthy Cake Company, winner of the FAIR Trophy for the Best FreeFrom Food 2009
And Trisha Kelly is not the only freefrom manufacturer to have benefited from winning an award. Even if a product does not win its category (and there is strong competition) being commended or highly commended has proved a very useful marketing tool for many of the 2009 winners – many of whom still display their certificates and the FreeFrom Food awards logo on their products and their websites.
And this year’s awards look set to be even more successful. The over 1,000 products entered have been whittled down to a shortlist of 200 covering 15 categories plus an Innovation Award for the best new freefrom product of 2010. Categories include not only the expected (gluten-free breads, cakes or biscuits) but gluten and dairy-free ready meals, scones, sweet tarts, Bakewell’s and cake bars, Christmas foods and, for the fist time, gluten-free beers!

The FreeFrom Food Awards, now in their third year, are the only industry awards that celebrate excellence in this rapidly expanding sector which is anticipated to reach a turnover of around £300 million in the UK and $2.6 billion worldwide by 2012.
The awards were started by www.foodsmatter.com, the very successful website and information source which logs over half a million hits on its 3,000 plus pages every month and includes the only dedicated site covering all aspects of freefrom food (http://www.foodsmatter.com/freefrom_foods/index.html).
The final judging for the 2010 awards takes place in 10 days time. Judges will include Simon Wright, chair of judges for the Q Awards, the Food and Drink Innovation Network ‘s Jeffrey Hyman, Jane Suthering, president of the Guild of Food Writers, Not Just Food ‘s Jane Milton of and Michelle Berriedale-Johnson, editor of foodsmatter.com
The awards will be presented by Antony Worrall Thompson on April 21st at an eagerly anticipated freefrom networking event at the Canal Museum behind King’s Cross.
