PINK LADY APPLES & HARRODS TEAM UP FOR VALENTINE’S DAY
We are told that 1,500 limited edition Pink Lady® apples, each with a perfect heart motif naturally imprinted in their blush pink skin were grown exclusively for Harrods and are now available to buy for Valentine’s Day in aid of Kiss It Better, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity appeal, to raise funds for research into the causes and treatment of childhood cancer.
The apples which launched yesterday in Harrods, were met with great excitement by hundreds of shoppers who were more than willing to pay a mere £3 (with the full purchase price being donated to Great Ormond Street). In fact, one shopper waltzed off with an entire case of heart apples! The heart imprinted apples make the perfect gift this Valentine’s Day, whilst simultaneously supporting a great cause.
The companay reports that those who passed by Harrods were mesmerised by the bright Pink Lady® branded Mini Clubman which was parked outside Knightsbridge tube station. Complimentary Pink Lady apple recipe, courtesy of Harrods’ very own Chef Marcus were also handed out to passers by.
So How Did They Do It?
In September 2009, Pink Lady selected apples on the more sunny face of the trees in an orchard in the south of France and placed heart shaped stickers on the fruit in advance of the coloration process. As the coloration began our little hearts were perfectly formed proving to the growers that love really does grow on trees!
Andy Macdonald, Managing Director of Coregeo, the master licensor for Pink Lady® apples in the UK commented: “Placing the heart sticker on the apple, all of which was done by hand, was quite a labour intensive process, which is why we have only produced this limited number of exclusive apples. We are very pleased with the results, particularly when the initiative is supporting Great Ormond Street and their Kiss it Better campaign.”
Matthias Kiehm, Business Unit Director for Food at Harrods, commented: “Harrods is thrilled to be continuing its support of Great Ormond Street Hospital with the sale of these exclusive Pink Lady® apples. A perfect way to show your affection and give to this great cause…we’re sure they’ll go down a treat with our shoppers this Valentine’s Day.”
If that wasn’t enough, Pink Lady® has also replaced the iconic white apple stickers with limited edition gold ones. So while your apple may not last forever, the golden sticker is sure to serve as a memento of this special Valentine’s Day gift.
For those willing to make a larger romantic gesture a limited edition of just 20 beautifully presented hampers containing ten of these very special apples will be available via the Harrods website; www.harrods.com
Pink Lady® apples are grown for 200 days from pip to perfection! The Growers say leaving them longer on the tree allows them to develop their unique personality, distinctive pink blush, sweet flavour and crisp texture.
