February 11th, 2010

Snow Leopard Snow Leopard vodka has increased its funding of snow leopard conservation projects.

Through Snow Leopard vodka’s support the Snow Leopard Trust UK (registered charity no 116101) has been able to fund the following new conservation projects run by the Snow Leopard Trust, head quartered in Seattle, USA:-

Educational Eco-Camp in Tamga village in Kyrgystan
The children of today living in the mountain communities of central Asia which are part of the snow leopard’s range are the future custodians of the species’ survival. During the summer children from the local communities of Ak-Shyriak, Inilchek, Karakolka and Eki-Naryn gather for an eco-camp on the south shore of lake Issyk-Kul to attend classes on snow leopard conservation, its ecosystem and to make new friends.

Snow Leopard Enterprise programme in Yamaat valley, Mongolia
Converting poor mountain communities from being a threat to a defender of the snow leopard is crucial for the species’ survival. By providing women with an international market place for their wool and beautiful handicrafts the Snow Leopard Trust is providing a regular and significant source of income the women previously have not had to spend on medicines and their childrens’ education. In return for the support from the Snow Leopard Trust the local communities enter in to a covenant to protect the snow leopard.

Livestock insurance programme in Ladakh villages in Northern India.
This programme compensates herder families for livestock lost to snow leopard attacks in return for the local community entering in to a covenant with the Snow Leopard Trust not to kill snow leopards as way of retribution for lost livestock, or to kill their natural prey species.

Vaccination programme in Northwest Frontier Province of Pakistan
10 times more livestock is lost to natural disease from lack of vaccination than from predation by snow leopards. In return for providing livestock vaccination for herders, the local community will then enter in to a covenant to protect the snow leopard and their prey rather than view them as a threat and nuisance.
