HAPPY BIRTHDAY FISH AND CHIPS, YOU ARE 150 YEARS OLD AND STILL CRISP YET MOIST

January 11th, 2010

The Independent newspaper has just collated an article celebrating 150 years of fish & chips!

We are told that the UK has around 10,500 chops serving the nation’s favourite British dish and that each friday one in five takeaways is still from the chippy, although as we know, this could be a Chinese chippy serving delicious pancake rolls and wontons too.

The Independent claims that chips have a third less calories than other takeaways and chunky fried Maris Piper potatoes (the chippies’ spud of choice) have less fat than a mayonnaise rich prawn sandwich.

But does the accolade for the most ancient fish and chip shop go to John Lees in the town of Mossley on the outskirts of Oldham, which was open in 1863, or does it go to Joseph Malin’s chippie which was open in Cleveland Street in the East End of London in 1860?
