THE BRITISH CHEESE BOARD URGES CHEESE PRODUCERS TO JUMP ON THE RED TRACTOR
The British Cheese Board (BCB) is joining forces with Assured Food Standards (AFS) to encourage British cheese producers to apply for the use of the Red Tractor logo on cheese packaging.
The Red Tractor scheme was set up in 2000 as an independent accreditation to recognise high quality farming and food production practices and standards. The logo can already be found on thousands of meat, dairy, cereal, vegetable and fruit products in shops and supermarkets across the UK.
The mark is recognised by consumers and retailers alike as a guarantee that the food they are buying comes from farms and food companies that meet high standards of food safety and hygiene, animal welfare and environmental protection. In the case of cheese, the Red Tractor logo signifies that it is made from farm assured milk produced in the UK from farm to pack, hence the Union flag emblem. Over 78,000 farmers and growers are now members of the scheme. A number of BCB members already use the Red Tractor logo – the aim is to get many more to sign up.
Nigel White, Secretary of the British Cheese Board, said; ‘Using the Red Tractor logo, British cheese producers will be guaranteeing consumers that the cheese they are buying is made from farm assured milk that has been produced to strict standards”.
David Clarke, Chief Executive of AFS added; ‘Whilst legislation still allows cheese produced outside the UK but packed in the UK to carry a UK Health Mark, the use of the Red Tractor mark guarantees the country of origin of both the milk and the cheese.’
