NEW CONCEPT BAKERY IN LONDON

December 10th, 2009

P1080714_2Konditor & Cook – which claims to be London’s best loved bespoke bakery – has just opened its latest location, close to the Southbank, on Stamford Street SE1.  The trendists amongst us will probably want to go and see what’s the latest in specialist baked goods.

Perched at the end of a Georgian terrace, just behind the South Bank and between Waterloo Station and the Tate Modern, this latest incarnation of Konditor & Cook derives its inspiration from a new take on the domestic kitchen as a showcase for its best known lines of cakes and savouries.

Said to be a perennial favourite for all lovers of to-die-for cakes, biscuits and brownies, the site is set to become a magnet for busy commuters, creative types and cake-aficionados alike.

“People who work from home have access to their kitchens, but need a home office, while those who work in offices also need the relaxed ambience of a domestic kitchen for a good chin-wag and to get their creative juices flowing”, says Konditor & Cook owner Gerhard Jenne, who came up with the idea for the new store.

Here you can choose from favourites like the almost too pretty-to-eat Magic Cakes, a slice of this week’s favourite cake, or just grab a coffee and a freshly-made sandwich and either sit down at the central communal table, or take out before tucking in.

The kitchen-like environment, designed by architect Kevin Allsop, makes for a buzzy, friendly atmosphere where –unusually – the division between customers and staff is broken down. Here there are no counters separating the two and oven, hob and sink, plus all the paraphernalia of the domestic kitchen, is on full view.

We are told that It’s here too that brides-to-be, with their heart set on a Konditor & Cook wedding cake, come for a personalised consultation, and where orders for special occasions are taken on the new Cake Hotline (0800 319 6767). To keep abreast of gorgeous cake inspiration and to ogle baking delights online, go to the newly designed website at www.konditorandcook.com or follow Konditor & Cook on Twitter.
