U.S. BEN & JERRY’S FAN GOES FAIRLY NUTS WITH NPD IDEA

November 13th, 2009

Ben & Jerry’s has turned a fan’s flavour dream into a sweet reality with this year’s Do The World A Flavour competition.

Fairy nutsToni Gunnison’s (Wisconsin, U.S.A.) Fairtrade concoction: caramel ice cream with praline and almond clusters (with a hint of salt) and a praline swirl, named Fairly Nuts, is set for global ice cream domination.

Toni was awarded first prize during a once in a lifetime trip to the Dominican Republic, where, the 15 finalists from different countries spent a week with Fairtrade farmers at Conocado, a Fair Trade Cocoa Co-op, and co-founders Ben Cohen & Jerry Greenfield, creating their suggested Fairtrade flavours under the watchful eyes of Ben & Jerry’s research and development Flavour Gurus.

They also participated in a local community project, building a playground for the local children of Yabon.

Toni went positively nuts when Flavour Gurus chose her idea as the winning flavour; ‘I think it’s pretty amazing that my flavour got picked. I’m kind of shocked”.

Toni’s creation was picked from over 100,000 flavour suggestions from 15 countries in the 90 day-long ‘Do The World A Flavour’ competition. The winning flavour, Fairly Nuts was the most popular name choice among competition entries. Ice cream flavours influenced by David ‘The Hoff’ Hasslehoff were also popular; two of the final entries were called Hazel-Hoff and Hazel The Coff. Berry White was also popular.

Ben & Jerry’s has a long standing tradition of turning fans’ suggestions into global flavours and with iconic flavours like Chunky Monkey, Cherry Garcia and Chubby Hubby all being suggested by fans, Flavour Guru Arnold Carbone says ‘It made sense to ask our fans to create our next global Fairtrade flavour – we know their inspirations can be the cream of the crop and Fairly Nuts is testament to that’.

Fairly Nuts will be available in pints and scoop shops in March 2010 in the UK, and is the latest addition to the growing Ben & Jerry’s Fairtrade line-up.

About Ben & Jerry’s
Ben & Jerry’s Homemade, Inc., the Vermont-based manufacturer of ice cream, sorbet and frozen yoghurts, was founded in 1978 in a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont, by childhood friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. Armed with a $5 correspondence course, a mutual love for ice cream and a mutual dislike for the gym, they soon became popular for making fun flavours in a socially responsible way.

Behind the funky flavour names such as Phish Food and Chunky Monkey, lies a long history of dedication to social causes and producing quality ice cream that rewards farmer and consumer. The Caring Dairy programme started in 2003 and focuses on 11 ‘sustainability indicators’ that ensure a high standard of living for farmers whilst protecting the environment.

In 2006 Ben & Jerry’s was the first ice cream company to use Fairtrade certified ingredients and the following year they were the first ice cream company to go Climate Neutral from cow to cone on all flavours produced in Europe. They committed to cut emissions and invest in carbon offsets from supporting NGOs to building wind farms.
