iPHONE COOKING APP WINS TIMES ACCLAIM
The Sunday Times published the first head-to-head review comparing the popular and highly publicised cooking app from Jamie Oliver, 20 Minute Meals (£4.99/$7.99 for the iPhone and iPod Touch), with its lesser-known independent rival, Dishy (£2.99/$4.99 for the iPhone and Touch).
Despite Jamie’s app having “all the gloss and pizzazz you would expect”, the review finds elements “irritating” and “a waste of time”. In contrast, Dishy is “better thought-through” and is praised for making the cooking process easier. “In this David v Goliath battle, it was Dishy that brought home the bacon.”
The article highlights the popularity of 20 Minute Meals, “an offshoot of the Jamie Oliver cooking empire”, noting that it has been the highest-grossing product in the UK app store for much of the last month. It has benefited from heavy promotion by Apple and is being featured in their TV adverts. Little wonder then, that it knocked Dishy from the top of the chart: Dishy is “more a home-grown affair, its 95 recipes sourced by a web designer and his mother.”
Despite the “David v Goliath” start for the two apps, The Sunday Times prefers Dishy and explains how it eases the cooking process: “Choose an entrée and it suggests starters, desserts and sides. Tell it the number you’re cooking for and it adjusts the quantities. The step-by-step recipes proceed with less rush, and the software cleverly stops the device from powering down. Where relevant, it uses a tap-to-start timer. Slow-curried lamb shanks were delicious — and even looked like their photo. As you come to the last screen, you can use the iPhone’s camera to take a shot of your own dish and upload it, with comments, straight to Facebook or Twitter.”
Dishy’s founder and lead developer, James Carroll welcomed the review: “We’re big fans of Jamie Oliver and his brand is formidable to compete with, but we are delighted that Dishy has been found the stronger of the two apps. We strived to make cooking with Dishy as easy as possible, and are glad that the hard work paid off.”
Dishy is available through iTunes and the App Store at £2.99/$4.99. For further information and a video demo, visit: http://dishyapp.com/
