GINSTERS PALM OIL SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE

Ginsters OCP pack shot_smThe UK’s leading savoury pastry brand, Ginsters, is delighted to announce that it has linked with the Green Palm initiative to support the production of sustainable palm oil in Indonesia.

The brand is the first savoury pastry brand in the UK to have joined the scheme.  The scheme rewards plantations who operate in a sustainable way as endorsed by the Round table on Sustainable Palm, (RSPO). Ginsters have entered into a direct understanding with one of the regions principal producers ‘SIPEF’ to ensure that for every tonne of palm used in its margarines, financial support goes to the people and environment within Papua New Guinea.

As one of the world’s most versatile oils, palm oil is widely used across the food industry, and the product significantly contributes to the developing economies of the producing countries. However, in recent years it has faced increasing scrutiny with regard to its environmental impact – including deforestation issues and the potential loss of important animal habitats.

Green Palm is a certificate trading programme which is designed to tackle both environmental and social problems created by the production of palm oil. Manufacturers taking part in the Green Palm programme are able to enter into an understanding with the palm producers via the Green palm trading platform, to promote the growing of palm in an environmentally responsible manner. In addition, producers taking part in the scheme can earn more for a crop which is sustainably sourced and responsibly farmed.

This link with Green Palm and SIPEF is the latest move by a company committed to doing business in a responsible way. In fact, Ginsters was recently given national recognition for its work on local sourcing and community initiatives by receiving a ‘Big Tick’ in this year’s BITC Rural Action Awards.

Mark Duddridge, Managing Director of Ginsters said “We are extremely pleased to be involved with the Green Palm project and SIPEF, and would encourage other businesses to get involved as soon as possible. We believe that the help we are giving to this particular area of Papua New Guinea is vital. We also believe this is a tangible way for the food industry as a whole to help promote responsible farming, and to protect the unique types of flora and fauna in the wider region.”

Ginsters has always worked in partnership with its local farmers and suppliers in Cornwall. Laurence Oldman, Purchasing Manager at Ginsters, believes the values that have driven the business in this direction are equally relevant to supporting a scheme like the Green Palm project. ‘It is our belief that in supporting this scheme we are helping to lead our sector in protecting the environment. It will demonstrate to our consumers that the Ginsters brand remains committed to product quality and responsible sourcing, both at home and abroad.”
