ALARA LAUNCHES GEO MEUSLI

November 23rd, 2009

Alara have always been found setting trends in the food industry and their record speaks for itself. The world’s first fair trade cereal company, one of the first companies registered with the Soil Association for being organic, the first company registered with the Coeliac Society (they now produce over 60% of the gluten free muesli in the UK), and last year the first food manufacturer to become ‘Zero Waste’ (nothing goes to landfill or incineration).

Fighting Poverty through your Breakfast Bowl – tradeAlara have been won numerous awards this year for their work, being recognised for their pioneering sustainable work in food manufacturing by winning the ‘Small Company of the Year’ at the Food Manufacturer Excellence Awards 2009.

The next step for Alara has come in the form of their latest partnership with the organization ‘Traidcraft’. Traidcraft are renowned for their mission statement of ‘helping poverty through trade’ and together with Alara have just created the world’s first ‘range’ of Fair Trade mueslis.
Traidcraft has been leading the way in Fair Trade for over 30 years, pioneering innovations and developing new products, like this tasty muesli, so that more producers and their communities benefit from Fair Trade. Their mission to ‘fight poverty through Trade’ is achieved through practicing and promoting approaches to trade that help those living in poverty in developing countries transform their lives.

Established in 1979 as a response to poverty, Traidcraft combines a trading company and a development charity, and were instrumental in setting up the Fairtrade Foundation.

Sourcing from over 100 producer groups in 30 countries, the two companies have used their contacts to create the range, which has 3 fantastic flavours – Mixed Berry, Fruit & Nut, and Exotic Fruit.

Their aim is to build lasting relationships with producers, support people to trade out of poverty and work to bring about trade justice. They help people like South African farmer Pieter van Wyk, banana dryer Norah Kagimu from Uganda, and supplier Richard Astudillo from Chile, who, through Traidcrafts’ hard work and lobbying, are now members of one of over 100 producer groups.

By tucking into a bowl of this new muesli you aren’t just helping yourself but growers all across the world and the environment too. As the first food company in the UK to go zero waste, absolutely nothing at Alara is thrown away, but instead is recycled in one way or another. Likewise the packaging on the new ‘Geo’ range won’t be going to landfill either, and the environmentally friendly design earned it a runners-up spot at the prestigious Natural & Organic Awards 2009; it is packaged in recyclable boxing (cardboard from sustainable resources) and a bag made of Super-ECO film – completely biodegradable within 18 months.
