TRUE TASTE OF WALES AWARDS NOVEMBER 19TH

October 19th, 2009

The menu at next month’s Wales the True Taste Food & Drink Awards will have a definite local flavour putting Abergavenny and Monmouthshire at the heart of the annual celebration of innovation and excellence in the Welsh food and drink industry.

This year’s award ceremony will be held at Abergavenny’s historic Market Hall on November 19th, where the 450 guests will dine on delicious dishes, most of which will be created from locally sourced produce.

Now in their eighth year the Welsh Assembly Government managed awards are regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the Welsh food and drink industry.

The menu features several producers from the Monmouthshire area, which last year won the True Taste Food Tourism Destination Award and hosting the Awards in the Abergavenny Market Hall puts the town and the surrounding area at the heart of this year’s competition.

Preparing the dishes at the Awards dinner, and catering for the three pre-awards receptions – which will be held at The Tythe Barn, The Angel Hotel, and The Priory – will be award-winning Cardiff based EJ Catering.

The company was formed ten years ago by Cordon Bleu trained cook, Emma Jenkins, and in 2008 won the True Taste Speciality Product (Pre-packed & Convenience Foods) category with its Braised Welsh Lamb with Ratatouille of Vegetables. The company is also a finalist in this year’s awards.

Said Emma Jenkins, “We are extremely excited about catering the awards this year in Abergavenny market hall, a venue steeped in food and producer history”

“Sourcing locally not only gives you great produce but it a supports the suppliers enabling them to grow and compete “
“Local produce is of such a high standard, we use all local meat which can be traced to the farms, local fish, some local dairy items plus many other ingredients like honey, cider and of course eggs”

Since the awards’ inception in 2002 the competition has grown steadily and has seen food and drink producers from across Wales honoured for their excellence and innovation.

There has been significant growth this year in entries for two categories in particular – Eating Out in Wales and Food Tourism Destination, with entries for the latter more than double last year’s total.

This year there are 18 award categories catering for all areas of food and drink production, retail and hospitality sectors as well as a new Export Achievement Category.

Meanwhile, keeping in touch with developments in the competition is easy with the launch of Truetaste.tv, a website and web-channel dedicated to the awards.
The website includes sections offering advice and support to past winners, and an area catering for the media.
