NATIONAL ENERGY SLUMP DAY 26TH OCTOBER

October 26th, 2009

The 26 October is the UK’s national Energy Slump Day – it is the day that we as a nation collectively feel an energy slump as it’s the first day back at work after the clocks go back;

New research shows that 81% of us struggle to stay active as the nights become longer and the days get shorter resulting in a collective energy slump.

However, according to 79% of the nation doing an evening activity when it’s dark once a week makes them feel more positive. As a result MARS DARK® has mounted its ‘Do it in the Dark’ campaign to encourage the nation to get up, get out and use winter evenings as an opportunity to enjoy exhilarating experiences. With 72% of the nation believing there is less to do when it gets darker, MARS DARK ‘s campaign is highlighting the fact that there are many activities to do at night and that these can actually have an added dimension of intensity due to the darkness, e.g. night time aerobics, winter walks and high visibility bike rides in cities at night.

According to Psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos:
“New experiences heighten sensitivity and the night time evokes feelings of excitement which stem from early memories. When we do activities in the dark the experience becomes more intense as we rely on sensory perception. Whether going swimming, to a firework display or even gardening, everything you listen to, smell and experience in the dark will be heightened by having to be more reliant on your other senses. “

It is reported that ~The MARS DARK ‘ Do it in the Dark’ campaign aims to encourage people to enjoy winter nights by embracing the dark and doing something active.

Contrary to popular belief there are many activities that take place in the dark nationwide. The options to ‘Do It In The Dark’ are endless – evening running clubs, Halloween and Bonfire parties, even the infamous London to Brighton bike ride is given a twist at night. But keeping going after dark can be an issue for some, with three out of four (76%) of the population admitting to needing an energy boost.

Dr Linda Papadopoulos offers some simple advice; “It’s a vicious circle, the less active you are the less active you become. People are also creatures of habit, when the clocks go back we automatically put our social life back, energy levels decrease and we need to challenge that instead of just assuming that’s how we are going to feel. Something as simple as doing an activity once a week can combat this hibernation syndrome and MARS DARK’s research findings demonstrate this.”

UK residents can’t escape dark winter nights but they can take action to beat the energy slump with MARS DARK and ‘Do It In The Dark’. MARS DARK will be on sale as a limited edition nationwide from 5th October 2009. Find out more at www.marsdark.com from October.
