YORK FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL PROMOTES CRUDE FOOD
York Food & Drink Festival, now in its 13 year is adopting the theme ‘Crude Food’ for this year’s 10 day event (18th – 27th September).
The message from the organisers is very simple – the definition of crude is natural or raw, unadorned or simply prepared and with that in mind a whole programme of events have been organised using these themes.
Be it foraging for food, great tastings of simply prepared food, organic food, slow food and even the effects of food and drink on the body the York Festival of Food & Drink is once again offering a huge range of attractive and educational events.
A daily “Slow Food” taste workshop allows attendees a comparative tasting of specific unadorned foods, Apples from Ampleforth Abbey (25th September) or moorland mutton (18th September), for example.
Michael Hjort, Festival director, said: “More than ever people are really thinking about the food they eat – the cost, quality and provenance. We want to highlight that getting back to basics doesn’t compromise on quality or cost the earth. Festival goers can go on a foraging course – an urban forage along the river bank or a sea-side forage – finding their food in the wild”.
As well as the many new additions to the programme, such as a whole host of two-course charity events, a wine fair and a beer fair, the Festival is still packed with exciting favourites from the fabulous Gurkha Curry to the Whisky Festival and the Launch Dinner to the Taste of Yorkshire Awards Dinner (in Association with the Yorkshire Post).
In the stunning back drop of the historic city of York, the Festival is packed with events for everybody, cookery demonstrations, dinners, educational workshops (adults and children), Yorkshire, Farmer’s and guest food markets and an ale trail.
Amongst the festival highlights this year are:
Fancy a Forage ( 23rd September) – forage with Taste the Wild’s Chris Bax in either York or Whitby.
Food for Free (19th September) – forage in the parks and riverbanks of York then cook up your tucker and eat.
Chocolate Day (20th September) – York has a rich history of chocolate production and a whole day is being dedicated to chocolate including The Chocolate Dinner where every dish will have chocolate in the ingredients.
