STEVIA THE NATURAL SWEETENER CONTINUES UPWARDS
Although the natural sweetener, stevia, is not yet approved in the European Union, there is already a lot of interest in our industry. Wild, the German ingredient supplier is working on a raft of applications.
Stevia is 300 times sweeter than sugar, but has no calories and is suitable for diabetics. These properties make stevia the perfect alternative for anyone keeping their calorie intake low and who prefer food with natural ingredients.
EU approval of stevia expected in 2011.
According to the February 2009 issue of the stern TV German news magazine, approximately 150 million people around the world use stevia daily. The sweetener is already approved in the USA, Japan, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil, but not in the European Union. WILD expects stevia will be officially approved in 2011.
Wild has been showing a number of its ingredient product at Drinktec in Munich.
