NEW MILK BREAK SHAKES UP SCHOOL MEAL MENUS

September 10th, 2009

As schools remain under pressure to provide nutritional meals which appeal to children directly, yet are sensitive to pricing, unique products like Milk Break provide solutions.

Milk Break is the first school compliant milkshake mix made with water rather than milk and was launched by Aimia Foods to the education sector at LACA 2009. Milk Break joins the already highly successful Juice Break product, which has proven a major success in primary school catering.

Milk Break uses 100 per cent skimmed milk powder that is nutritionally equivalent to liquid milk and contains nothing artificial. Coming in the two most popular flavours of milkshake – strawberry and chocolate – it provides 62 per cent calcium and 48 per cent protein of the nutritional requirements of an average primary school lunch in just a 100ml serving.

As Milk Break only needs water to rehydrate the formula, not milk, there are dramatic savings and benefits in storage and handling costs. For example, a single case of Milk Break equates to 52 pints of milk, there is no heavy lifting, cooler and fridge space is saved and crucially in tests children rated the product as good as or better than more expensive milkshake solutions.

Neal Haworth, category marketing manager at Aimia Foods, comments: “Milk Break is in the unique position of offering a drink which children want to consume – as milkshakes are perceived as treats. School catering has been revolutionized in recent years, and offering children drinks which they would traditionally buy on the high street has not always been possible due to monetary constraints.

“Moreover as it’s made from 100 per cent skimmed milk, rather than semi-skimmed milk, the fat content of each Milk Break drink is reduced, making it a much healthier option for school children.

“Although the milkshake mix market has been relatively stagnant over recent years, it is currently worth at least £30million* and we know that 57 per cent of milkshakes are consumed by children under 16 years. We even have a Milk Break savings calculator so local authority decision makers can see the cost savings for themselves of Milk Break versus traditional liquid milk and flavouring syrups or powders.”

The new Milk Break drink comes in 2 x 2.5kg composites which are available to all local authorities. For more information on Milk Break from Aimia Foods phone 01942 408600 or email customer.services@aimiafoods.com.
