DIABETES MAY BE PREVENTED WITH POMEGRANATE SEED OIL

September 7th, 2009

A British Journal of Nutriton study has reported that pomegranate seed oil, which is rich in linolenic acid, was found to reduce weight and improve insulin response in mice and this might translate to an improvement for humans.

Until now the juice and pulp of the pomegranate have received a lot of attention because of their possible prevention of prostate cancer and possible beneficial effects on joint health.  But recently attention has turned to the oil of the pomegranate seed.

Nutraingredients.com reports on the study details.

The University Of Houston study, Led by Brian McFarlin, divided a group of sixty male mice into three groups.  The first group as given a high fat diet, the second group was given the same diet but this time it pomegranate seed oil was added, and the third group had a normal diet.

At its conclusion, the study showed that the mice who had the diet with added pomegranate seed oil showed 10g less weight gain than the group fed the high-fat only diet.  Also their insulin response improved and their leptin and adiponectin components improved.
