BILLINGSGATE SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD AWARDS 2009

September 24th, 2009

Interest was at fever pitch as 120 industry professionals gathered to hear The Sustainable Seafood Awards 2009 being announced at Billingsgate Seafood Training School, Wednesday 23rd September.

Having won the 2008 award, the responsibility fell to Mike Berthet, director of seafood at M&J Seafood to open the ceremony and then to present the trophy to the eventual winner, Dragon Feeds of Port Talbot, South Wales.

Mike Berthet kick-started proceedings with a stirring speech on the need for more joined up thinking within the industry and from government bodies before the seven finalists pitched their sustainable species to the audience stating why it deserved their vote.

After much deliberation from the audience of chefs, journalists and industry stakeholders, Mike Berthet took the microphone once more to announce Dragon Feeds the unanimous winner presenting CEO Cliff Gapper and MD Tony Smith with the stunning blue glass trophy for their presentation on farmed Sea Trout.

Dragon Feeds has developed a sustainable alternative to fishmeal, using a method of binding the appropriate amino acid to the protein. The results mean that fish and invertebrates are able to more efficiently digest the required amounts of amino acid leading to superior growth, less waste and less water pollution. The introduction of farmed polychaetes into the feed has acted as a significant attractant, thus making the feed more palatable to fish and invertebrates.

After presenting the trophy to Dragon Feeds Mike Berthet commented: “Dragon Feeds won by a clear margin in the end, it was a very passionate pitch by Tony and it clearly struck a chord with the audience. I am very pleased Dragon Feeds won as it is a real step forward for the industry, which has been crying out for a sustainable fish feed.

“It has been a fantastic day for everyone involved and a real privilege to be able to share this level of knowledge and insight on so many different species of fish. I just wish the government would contribute more and play their part.”
