BBC REPORTS ANOTHER ASPARTAME PROBE

September 23rd, 2009

The BBC has reported that another research effort will seek if Aspartame, the popular intense sweetener can cause problems to those with sensitivity.

Expert advice is that aspartame – found in more than 4,000 products – is safe to consume.

The experts say that aspartame, which is used in over four thousand products, is generally recognised as safe.  But over the years, some users have reported side effects such as fatigue, vomiting, dizziness and diarrhoea.

The study is to be undertaken by The University Of Hull and is to be funded by the FSA (Food Standards Agency).

The ingredient, which is one hundred and fifty times sweeter than sugar is found in many food and drink products such as soft drinks, yoghurts, and confectionery.

The concern is linked to a plethora of worries, over the years, about the general safety of intense sweeteners and their possible side effects.

The FSA and the European Food Safety Authority have already concluded that there is no robust evidence of health impact and Professor Stephen Atkin, who will head the new research team has said: “This study is not to determine whether aspartame can be consumed safely; this has already been established, but rather to see whether certain people are sensitive to it.”
