WAITROSE OPENS FIRST LONDON CONVENIENCE STORE
Waitrose has today announced it is to open its first convenience store in the Capital, with a store in Crouch End, North London.
The retailer has acquired the former Woolworths at 35-39 Broadway, which has been vacant since January, as it continues to build on its presence in the convenience sector.
Waitrose will take over the 6,230sq ft store in September and, following a multi-million pound refurbishment, aims to open by October.
Up to 60 job opportunities will be created for the local community and recruitment will begin this week. All jobs will be advertised at www.jlp.jobs.com.
As Partners in the John Lewis Partnership, new employees will be entitled to a say in how the business is run as well as an annual share in profits, which this year saw staff receive 13% of their annual wage in bonus.
The new shop is the third Waitrose convenience store in the country after the supermarket launched its first in Nottingham last December and its second in Bristol in March. A further convenience branch is expected to be opened at a location and date yet to be decided.
Following recent openings in Upminster and Croydon, Crouch End will become the 45th Waitrose store within Greater London as the supermarket continues to expand its portfolio in the capital.
Waitrose Director of Development, Nigel Keen, said:
“We have wanted to come to Crouch End for a long time and believe we have found a location that will allow us to attract shoppers to the high street and trade successfully. Through revitalising a vacant building, we will not only create new jobs, but provide a wider choice of shopping services for the local community.
“Our objective is always to make a long lasting positive contribution to any area we serve. It is in our best interest to ensure Crouch End is an attractive place for visitors to come and we look forward to having the opportunity to work alongside our fellow traders.
“Our two existing convenience stores have successfully ensured we offer something unique within the market and we are confident Crouch End will further enhance our growing reputation in this sector.”
- Waitrose has over 200 branches dedicated to offering quality fresh food, value and customer service.
- Waitrose was voted ‘Britain’s favourite supermarket’ by Which? Magazine, Good Housekeeping Magazine and in a viewer survey by BBC Watchdog.
- Unlike other major supermarkets, Waitrose isn’t owned by shareholders and the City, but by everyone who works for the John Lewis Partnership, ensuring a high level of commitment amongst Waitrose employees.
- Waitrose recognises its important role in the community it serves, providing support for local schools with food education, and providing time and money towards local initiatives and charities.
- Waitrose aims to combine the convenience of a supermarket with the expertise and service of a specialist shop.
