WAITROSE IS THE FIRST TO LAUNCH BROWN RICE SUSHI
Already a healthy option with it’s low calorie count and with some types high in omega 3, sushi is fast becoming one of the nation’s favourite lunchtime choices. Waitrose is the first UK supermarket to offer sushi made with brown rice.
Until now, UK shoppers have only been able to enjoy the Japanese cuisine from their local supermarket made with white rice. Delicious, but not ideal for those who like their lunches to stave off hunger pangs until dinner time. Customers can now choose Taiko Brown Rice Nigiri Sushi which is hand prepared using genmai brown rice and farmed salmon, trout and prawns.
Brown rice sushi is already popular across the pond as health conscious Americans look for a healthier alternative to white rice. Waitrose customers can now enjoy deliciously nutritious sushi lunches without the mid afternoon slump which eating white rice can cause.
Today brown rice is a staple for nutritionally savvy shoppers who are already aware of the benefits of consuming food in its most natural state. Brown rice is a wholegrain in its truest form and therefore contains more nutrients and vitamins than white rice which are removed during the refining process. As brown rice is slowly digested, it is recommended by nutritionists who suggest following the Glycacemic Index Diet (GI).
Waitrose Nutritionist, Joanne Lunn, says “As fad, quick fix diets come and go, the low GI diet continues to be highly regarded by nutritionists. This tried and tested way of eating encourages consuming starchy foods which release their energy more slowly.”
Wholegrain foods such as brown rice are ideal for dieters as they can stop people snacking when their energy levels dip. Slimmers and food lovers alike can rejoice at this mouth-watering yet saintly option!
Says Waitrose Sushi Buyer, David Stone, “We already sell a wide range of authentic sushi, with one in every ten packs sold in the UK being bought at Waitrose. It is very important that we provide our customers with a diverse and exciting selection and we continually research how our offering can be improved. We’re excited to be the first UK supermarket to offer sushi made with brown rice, and are sure that our customers will love it.”
Taiko Brown Rice Nigiri Sushi (£3.99 for 159g) is exclusively available in 146 Waitrose branches.
Each pack contains vinegared genmai brown rice topped with fresh salmon, trout or prawn, with pickled ginger, wasabi and soy sauce (2 x salmon Nigiri, 2 x prawn Nigiri, 1 x salmon and trout Nigiri).
100g of Taiko Brown Rice Nigiri Sushi contains 155 kcals, 2.4 g fat and 0.4 g saturated fat.
Waitrose is the only UK supermarket to sell truly authentic sushi by using raw fish in its recipes.
Waitrose sells a wide range of sushi with 22 lines in total.
