RETAILERS ASKED TO GIVE MORE TRANSPARENT INFORMATION ON PACKAGING
According to a BBC news interview this morning the Local Government’s Association, which asked retailers for information on their packaging, only received direct replies from Morrisons, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer. The remaining retailers referred them to WRAP (the government’s Waste Resources Action Programme)
The Local Government Association (LGA) said “only Morrisons, Waitrose, and Marks & Spencer responded to its request for details on packaging.”
The LGA criticises WRAP because it only publishes aggregated data for the grocery sector as a whole, and doesn’t break down the information store retailer by retailer.
“Supermarkets must be open with people about how much packaging they are producing,” said chairman of the Local Government Association in a letter to Environment Secretary Hilary Benn.
“It is vital that consumers can make informed choices about where they shop and which products they buy.”
