OBESITY CONTINUES TO RISE IN USA

July 23rd, 2009

The Trust for America’s Health together with The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has just released a report which says that US obesity rates have increased in 23 states over the last year, and have not reduced in any states at all.

The US food industry, much like the UK’s has been under pressure to help stop and reverse this trend by taking out calorie intense materials from its products, and also by encouraging exercise.

The report is entitled F as in Fat, and it recommends that the US federal government should “work with industry to elimiate junk food advertising to children” and “evaluate current snack taxes”.

It is reported that obesity rates for children have now reached 30%. And the report claims “Food prices, particularly for more nutritious foods, are expected to rise, making it more difficult for families to eat healthy foods,” it said. “In addition, due to the strain of the recession, rates of depression, anxiety and stress, which are linked to obesity for many individuals, also are increasing.”
