FOOD INDUSTRY ORGANISING FLU CONTINGENCY

July 29th, 2009

The UK food industry is putting plans in place to ensure continuity of supply in the face of rising numbers of flu victims.

As reported by Food Manufacture Magazine The Food Chain Emergency Liaison Group, co-ordinated by DEFRA are meeting regularly to discuss developments.

The Food & Drink Federation (FDF) is represented on this group, and Charlotte Lawson, who is Director Of Member Services said “Our members receive daily updates from government. We have set up an incident management team, which I’m heading, and send out email alerts to help companies put appropriate plans in place.

It’s all about communication. The thing is to be vigilant and use the time now to get plans in place in anticipation of the expected rise in cases.”

The Business Advisory Network For Flu is predicting a 9% drop in staff members due to illness by the beginning of September with a further rise to a peak of 12%.

Some suppliers might have to impose rationing.

The government is considering relaxing EU rules on the hours worked by lorry drivers enabling them to cover for missing drivers.
