TWO CHICKS LAUNCH FRESH EGG WHITES

June 23rd, 2009

Two chicks says “Now that the weather is warming up it’s time to follow in celebrity footsteps and start your day with an egg white omelette to help lose those pounds in time for summer”

Egg white has 70% less calories than whole eggs, is fat free, cholesterol free, low carb, low GI and is an excellent source of protein – the perfect health food. Dieters, the health conscious, sports enthusiasts and body builders love the product. So it is little wonder that celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Victoria Beckham, Paris Hilton and Eva Longoria, and sports personalities such as Jonny Wilkinson and Gavin Henson use egg white to stay in shape.

Entrepreneurs Anna Richey (30) and Alla Ouvarova (27) (who reached the national final of the competition HSBC Start-Up Stars in 2008) successfully launched their egg white in England in August 2007 in Selfridges, and it is now sold in selected Waitrose and Sainsbury’s stores over there. Prior to the launch of Two Chicks, liquid egg white, which is very big in the US, was never available to buy in retail in the UK or Ireland. Alla said, “we are really excited to be going into Ireland. We believe that there is a big market for our product there Each carton contains the egg white of 15 free range eggs so is cheaper than separating the equivalent.”

A new report explains why eggs, and in particular egg whites are so good for you. Those who really want to look after their health and watch their fat and calorie intake should consider the benefits of eating just the egg whites, which are both fat and cholesterol free, low in carbohydrate and rich in high quality protein. They also contain useful amounts of selenium and B vitamins. While the yolks are also nutritious, they have some disadvantages; each yolk contains around 7g of fat, 200mg of cholesterol and the majority of the egg’s calorie content (the white has 70% less calories than the yolk) which is why current scientific evidence suggests that one should eat no more than seven eggs per week.

Sigrid Gibson, author of the report and a Registered Public Health Nutritionist said, “The benefits of eggs have long been known to nutritionists, however there are limits to the number one should eat. People who like to eat eggs frequently and are likely to exceed seven eggs per week have the option of using pasteurised liquid egg whites, rich in protein, riboflavin and selenium. These can make savoury dishes such as omelettes and scrambled eggs that are almost indistinguishable in taste from those made from whole eggs, and can also be used in desserts and smoothies. Egg whites therefore have major nutritional benefits for all those concerned about healthy diets – particularly those restricting dietary fat or cholesterol, and they do not have the limitations of whole eggs.”

“Egg whites are rich in protein, yet low in calories and therefore have a high satiety value. This means they help you to feel full for longer and thus help you to control your weight. Egg whites are therefore a valuable asset in diets designed to promote weight loss. Egg whites have been shown to increase the hunger-suppressing hormone CCK, which delays the rate at which food passes through the stomach. Egg whites may also have antioxidant and antihypertensive properties and have been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol).”

Anna said, “This report confirms that egg whites really are an excellent health food. I am so pleased that we decided to introduce the product to UK and Irish supermarkets. I had found separating eggs myself to be a real hassle – and wasteful, I was determined to find an easier way.”

Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum said, “With all the focus on obesity the Forum welcomes products such as two chicks free range liquid egg white. Egg white in particular, being fat and cholesterol free and a brilliant source of protein is perfect for weight-loss, looking after your heart and general healthy eating. ”

The American Heart Association recommends that you limit your average daily cholesterol intake to less than 300 milligrams. If you have heart disease, limit your daily intake to less than 200 milligrams. www.americanheart.org . The USDA recommends less than 200 mg/day of cholesterol per day for adults with elevated LDL blood. www.usda.gov .Therefore, if you eat an egg (which contains around 200mg cholesterol) on a given day, it’s important to limit or avoid other sources of cholesterol for the rest of that day. As egg white is cholesterol free, there are no such restrictions.

The key findings of the report ‘Health and nutrition outcomes associated with consumption of eggs and egg-white – a review of the evidence’ is below.

Egg whites are nutrient-dense, yet low in calories

Egg whites contain high quality protein (the amino acid profile matches human amino acid requirements more closely than most other protein sources) and contains useful amounts of B vitamins (especially riboflavin) and selenium.

Selenium is essential to key antioxidant enzymes that protect cells from damage by free radicals, and is essential for proper functioning of the immune system and thyroid gland (Rayman 2000). Selenium intakes have been falling in the British diet due to more use of European wheat (low in selenium) instead of Canadian wheat (rich in selenium) (Rayman 2002).

Although it is unclear whether egg yolk or egg white has the greater satiating power, the lower energy content of egg whites means that their satiety index is almost certainly higher than whole egg. Egg white is recommended as part of the nutritional support for obese patients after bariatric surgery, where the long term aim is weight loss (Rubio and Moreno 2007).

Adequate protein intake is important and this can be obtained from eggs, fish, low fat dairy products, lean meat/poultry and nuts. Of all these sources, egg white, being fat-free, can be especially useful in helping with adherence to a diet low in fat and saturates.

Eggs not associated with heart disease

Heart charities have recently revised their advice and say eggs are now fine as part of a healthy diet low in saturated fat. Eggs only contain modest amounts of saturated fat, but if you want to avoid even that, try egg whites, which are fat free. Available in pasteurised liquid form, egg whites are economical, versatile, convenient and safe as part of a healthy balanced diet for all ages.

Cholesterol

Whole eggs have a small effect on blood cholesterol for most people, (scientists reckon that one extra egg per day may increase the risk of heart disease by about 2%). On the other hand a study found that egg whites lowered LDL (bad) cholesterol in young women as much as tofu. Even better, the egg white diet seemed to raise HDL (good) cholesterol more than Tofu (Asato, Wang et al. 1996)).This hypocholestrolaemic (cholesterol lowering) effect might be mediated through inhibiting the uptake of cholesterol in the gut (Matsuoka, Kimura et al. 2008).

Blood Pressure

Egg whites may have a role in controlling high blood pressure, one of the main risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Egg white peptides (produced when egg white protein is digested) appear to work in a similar way to the blood pressure lowering drugs known as ACE-inhibitors (Davalos et al) and also have antioxidant properties. (caution: no-one should stop taking prescribed medication without first consulting their doctor).

Diabetics and overweight people with cardiovascular conditions are advised to lose weight via a combination of exercise and whatever healthy weight- reducing diet that they can comply with. This should be high in vegetables, fruit, fish and wholegrains and be low in saturated fat and salt. Low fat protein sources such as lean meat, low fat dairy products and egg – in particular egg white – may reduce the GI and GL of the total diet and help with glucose control.
