Bakeryandsnacks.com reported that the Chinese authorities have put into effect a new safety law which they are confident will prevent a recurrence of the melamine contamination and subsequent scandal which damaged their food manufacturing reputation.

300,000 people became ill and there were a number of deaths following the contamination.

The government pledged that breaches would be treated very seriously and offenders would face severe penalties. The new laws will tighten up requirements and put in place rigorous food recall systems as well as higher levels of supervision.

Particular attention is being paid to the control of food risks, new product introduction and food standards.

Health Minister Chen Zhu said that experts sitting on two national panels would provide a more stringent system for safety evaluation as well as improve the detection of toxicity and also manage risk assessments.
