DEVON COMPANY MAKES THE BEST CORNISH PASTY

May 11th, 2009

Chunks, based in Ottery Devon, has been crowned Cornish Pasty Maker of the year, and has provoked an outcry amongst Cornish pie bakers.  In order to gain this accolade, Chunks had to beat many large as well as small competitors.

According to Devon 24, the on line news agency, the Cornish pie makers claimed that non Cornish manufacturers should have been barred from entering the competition and appealed to have Chunk’s disqualified, but in vain.

To make matters worse, Chunks got a “champion reserve” placement in the “Other Pasty” category.

Simon Bryon-Edmond, Managing Director of Chunks defended his company’s position and accused the Cornish companies of complacency.

He is quoted as saying “We were the underdogs in the competition but we know our pasty is a winner. The Cornish have no rights on the Cornish pasty- We have proved we are more capable with a Devon Pasty.

“The recipe is no great secret. We use the best ingredients, all sourced from Devon, and the best herbs and spices.

“Its just 20 of us here making pasties all day every day so this is quite a good show. Things were looking bleak for us this time last year but now business is flying.

We didn’t expect this fallout and for things to kick off the way they did- but the fact the Cornish have reacted so badly won’t have done the competition any harm.”

Matthew O’Callaghan, chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, which organised the pie competition, admitted that to have been eligible, pasties should have been made in Cornwall.

He said: “There was supposed to be a disclaimer on the application form which stated all entrants to the Cornish Pasty competition must come from Cornwall.”

“It wasn’t done and I have to admit it was an administrative cock-up”.

Mr O’Callaghan said that while Chunk would keep its award because there had been an “honest mistake”, next year the rules would be made much clearer.
