USING CHEESE TO HELP MAKE ST GEORGE’S DAY A NATIONAL HOLIDAY
As the campaign to make St Georges Day a national holiday continues to gather pace, one of England’s best-known treasures today added its weight to the momentum.
Cheshire cheese has produced a unique St Georges flag made entirely of cheese (13KG of it!), showing its support for the ongoing campaign to make St Georges Day (Thursday 23 April) a national holiday.
After being unveiled in historic Chester, the flag is being sent to Downing Street in an attempt to persuade Gordon Brown to act on the request for another Bank Holiday.
Cheshire cheese, which has been a favourite since the Romans invaded and is even mentioned in the Domesday Book, is the quintessential English cheese. Its definitely not fromage.
On a day when we reflect on everything that is great about England, the flag made entirely of red and white Cheshire cheese, shows just how proud Cheshire and England should be!
David Wells, Cheshire cheese spokesperson said: The North West of England is extremely proud of its history and its famous cheeses.
Cheshire cheese is made almost exclusively in the region which is why we produced the St Georges flag to show our support for making St Georges Day a national holiday.
Perhaps in these heated political times the Government may be more favourably inclined to giving St Georges Day national holiday status to raise its popularity?
Cheshire cheese supports the St Georges Day dot com organisation (www.stgeorgesday.com) who campaign annually for it to become a national bank holiday.
Colin Tabor, founder of St Georges Day dot com said: The more support we get for our cause each year, the better, so we are delighted that Cheshire cheese is in support of our efforts. The more voices that are heard each year, the more chance there is for change.
Project Engineering Manager, Damien Murphy of Reaseheath College in Nantwich, constructed the flag for Cheshire cheese. I was delighted to be approached and love a challenge! The flag looks as good as it tastes and I fully support the campaign.
